He has been living with it.
And in my own way, I have been living with it. In his own way, my
husband has been living with it. In everybody's own way, our
entire family has been living with it.
Here it is. A big
boring ol' Tuesday. And today 14 years
ago our lives changed in an instant.
Today, there was no parade.
No fancy dinner. No
balloons. Just a family sitting together
on the couch before bedtime taking it all in.
When I brought it up, everyone became very quiet. There was a solemn respect emanating from all
the boys. They weren't sad, they weren't cheering...they
were simply contemplative of it all.
"How does it make you feel J?"
"Special."
Said with the sly smirk only a 14 year old could muster.
We went through a few things that I had saved in J's
keepsake box.
The hospital gown they gave to J when he was admitted. It was the smallest they had and he swam in
it.
And 14 years later, he's all ready to get his permit
soon. He is entering High School in just
weeks. And he is every bit as strong and
resilient as he was that day so many years ago. I wish I could convey how proud I am of
him...words fail me.
So here's to J. As
well as all my boys, and all of the children, teens and adults that live
anyway. Soar anyway. Succeed anyway.
Inspirations. Every
one.
And especially today...this one. My one.
It doesn't seem right to wish a cwd a "happy D day" yet being able to do so means we celebrate the years they have soared, the years they have grown healthy, the years they have proven that diabetes doesn't stop life. So here's to you J and all you have accomplished and will accomplish. Here's to being loved and loving back. Here's to your zest for life and the fact that the world is a better place with you in it!
ReplyDeleteAwww, Thank you, Christina! I'm so glad to be sharing this journey with you! We are better together!

DeleteDiagnosed at 8 months. Wow, my heart! What a wonderful family you have, Meri!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Emily! They are amazing, and amazingly...they were all born that way. I take none of the credit!
DeleteSuch a miraculous road he/your family has traveled since that dx day...You are all sooo special, heroic, strong, resiliant...we love you guys!!
ReplyDeleteLove you too, Kelly! Thanks for being such a support to me over the past few years!
DeleteYou and your family always amaze me, Meri! The grace and gratitude you all show in everything you deal with comes through so beautifully in your writings. Happy Anniversary to your amazing boy and a massive amount of hugs and love to you all!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the love and the hugs Cindy! Hope your family is doing well! <3
DeleteI'm right there with you. I don't know many other moms of cwd who were diagnosed so early. My "litle girl" was 9 months old when the docs finally figured out it was diabetes. She turned 12 a few days after returning from diabetes camp this summer. All the best to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you too! We've come so far!
DeleteYou again, are making me cry in the public library. I should not read your posts outside of my home. The polar bear!
ReplyDeleteI love your family and am so grateful you share them with us.
Our d-versary is tomorrow. B. has requested that we celebrate at...McDonald's. The whole thing feels impossibly grim.
Congratulations to you and your J.
Happy D-Versary! I can't tell if you feel your anniversary is impossible grim...or the fact that you have to eat your dinner at McDonalds! lol! Regardless, I hope you have a wonderful day, looking back and patting yourself on the back. You are doing this!
DeleteI found your blog only a few weeks ago as my 2-year old was diagnosed only a month ago. I'm inspired by your strength, all you have to endure. It makes my trials seems so minimal. Thank you for your honesty and your strength. It keeps me going.
ReplyDeleteI remember it well! I had two that had diabetes whilst in their second year. It was so crazy difficult trying to guess how the baby was feeling! But, before you know it, your baby will be checking his/her own sugar and you'll wonder where the time has gone! I'm so glad we found each other! All my best to you!
DeleteThat bear teething toy hit me too. I cannot even begin to imagine what it's like to manage an eight month old with Type 1 (our DD was 8 years). You kept him alive and healthy, happy and strong. It's something you should celebrate as a family. Happy Diaversary J! And this "honeymoon," "anniversary" terminology has got to go, LOL.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Honeymoon's are supposed to be fun...agreed! Thank you for the well wishes!
DeleteI'm late.
ReplyDeleteBut I wanted to come and say thank you'll for sharing your story, opening your heart to all of us and for being you.
I will say Happy D Day, celebrating the day his life was saved and everyday after you guys have kicked Ds ass!!!!
Love you friend!
I am catching up on my reading and couldn't miss the chance to comment on a diaversary post! Congrats to J and the rest of your family!
