(Yesterday 11 year old B came up to me and said, "I'm going to write a post for your blog, Okay?" And I said, "Okay." And here it is. Unedited. Well, except he used they boys' full names, and I edited them down to initials.)
Hey. You know me. Well, you know me as “B.” You know, B, the
guy in my mom’s blog. Well it’s time you know how I feel about diabetes.
It’s a challenge having diabetes. Everyone knows that. You
constantly think about it. “What am I?” “Could I go low?” “Am I prepared?” I
(almost) always think about that and I get tired of it. I know my mom does get
tired of that. We all want to get rid of it. But there are some things I like
about diabetes.
For example, you can get fast passes at theme parks like Six
Flags, Disneyland, and Disneyworld. Speaking of Disneyworld, there’s always the
awesome Friends For Life. I mean we got a scholarship to go to Florida. If we didn’t have diabetes we wouldn’t have
gone. That’s amazing. Plus, some get dogs that sniff out lows! We got our dog
Lawton because we have diabetes. I love dogs. Also, you can get candy for lows!
Everyone loves candy!
You know what makes diabetes easier? Knowing that you’re
never alone. I always know that because of my brothers. When I’m with J I
feel better cause he knows a lot. He knows when I should test which is great
about him. Plus, he knows how to bolus, and he can tell me how many carbs.
L is an amazing brother. He always stays strong. He’s not
scared of diabetes. That’s what I love about him. He always thinks he will be
fine.
M doesn’t have diabetes. He doesn’t know what it’s like to
be stabbed by a needle everyday. But he knows that we need to take care of it
and he helps. Mom gets tired at night and needs rest. M practically stays up
till 12 anyway. So, M tests for us at night. Perfectly logical. He a great
help and a great brother!
Mom loves us all. She does whatever she can do to help us
with diabetes. She always gets us prepared. I love her because she always knows
what to do. She also is a great mom.
Sometimes she might embarrass me, but she is awesome!!!
Well, this is how I feel. I love all my brothers. I get sick
of diabetes. I know my mom gets sick, too. That’s how I feel. Thanks for

Awesome B! Thanks for the info on how you feel. I bet my 12 year old diabetic son feels the same. Not like he's going to tell his super cool mom, ;-) how he feels! I have to find out from other guys! You ROCK and so does your mom and brothers!

ReplyDeleteGreat post B. Diabetes is tough (I've had it for about 41 years). But I think your positive outlook will help you (and your brothers) a LOT. Hope we all get to see 'the cure' before the end of the century, sooner if possible.

I know you don't know me but I'm so so happy to know you, your mom and brothers. Your whole family makes me smile. Interesting, entertaining and inspiring, And yes it is great to know that you are not alone when facing tough things in life. Wow, you are a great writer for your age B!! It is nice to hear the honesty of how you feel, and it is even better to know that it isn't ALL bad!!! We are "lucky" in our house too since there is more than one of us with Diabetes. I have Diabetes like my Daughter, but I could never understand what it is like as a kid! Thanks for sharing! And yep....your Mom is the QUEEN of the DOC if you ask me :) She is pretty darn amazing!
ReplyDeleteGreat post B! I am "lucky" that I work with a fellow diabetic. I am a T2 and was dx about 11 years ago. My coworker is a T1 and was dx 21 1/2 years ago. She is a big encouragement to me. We test together most nights and compare our results, which I think is cool!

You couldn't be more write - we all get sick of diabetes but it has some benefits - like I wouldn't know your mom or have met you and your brothers if it weren't for Diabetes - and bonus for FFL and Disney World. I have a 17 year old son who has had type 1 for 12 years, and I know he could use someone who lives with the disease like he does. I can't wait to share your blog with him. You did a great job covering not just how you feel, but a lot of the great things about diabetes that it's sometimes hard to remember when diabetes doesn't feel like cooperating. B...you are a hero to your mom and those around you for facing this disease with a happy face. :) I know it's not always easy or fun in the least. You are a very intelligent, articulate, and strong boy! As the mother of a 10-year-old little girl with T1, I really enjoyed this blog post. I particularly liked how you are able to find the good in a situation that so many people can't. My daughter likes to find the good parts to having diabetes too. I am impressed by the close relationship you have with your brothers. My daughter has a 14-year-old sister who is not a diabetic, and she helps her out a lot too. It has enabled my girls to have a bond stronger than most siblings. Lastly, from all of us who have prayed for your family, thank you for loving and taking care of your mother. You realize what a job she has, how she gladly does it, and it's wonderful that she doesn't have to do it thanklessly. You are an amazing family. Awesome job, B! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post B. It's always good to hear things from a kid's point of view. You have a great attitude about it all. My daughter, Shealyn (9 yrs old and dxd at age 3) once said she wouldn't go back and change getting T1. She says it has made her strong and confident and she liked it that way. She was in L's age group at FFL but I'm not sure they ever met. FFL is wonderful and I hope you get to attend again.

OK - I'm a "B" and have diabetes just like you. Reading your blogjack was the best part of my day (and it was a pretty good day!). Thanks for taking the time to write. I am in awe of your family and how everyone is helping everyone out. I try not to use the four of you as examples to my two boys but every once in awhile I can't help myself! My son with diabetes is getting on a plane to fly solo from OH to MN tomorrow so I am just a little freaked out. Perhaps you could send "M" some positive vibes so he remembers to take care of himself.....Have a great week! An older, but probably not much wiser, "B".
